The National Centre for Guidance in Education (NCGE) will cease to operate from 1st September 2022.
The NCGE and its Management Committee, Léargas, the Department of Education, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Solas and ETBI have been carrying out significant work since earlier this year to prepare for the reorganisation of guidance support. A Transitions Working Group and additional sub-groups have been meeting regularly to co-ordinate the reorganisation.

NCGE has been working closely with our IT provider to ensure that the Texting Facility within the AGMS is fully operational for all services. This Texting Facility allows AEGS staff to send texts (via the AGMS), with prior permission of the client already provided. Providing for a ‘cap’ of 500 texts per AEGS, funded for each of the ETB AEGS by NCGE, this extra 500 Texts per service is now available and supports the following:
( i) Allows AEGS to contact those hard to reach clients who may not have suitable internet access, to provide information and offer continued and additional guidance supports where appropriate.
(ii) Provides a process whereby the client receiving guidance online can provide their noted consent to their data being entered onto the AGMS following the guidance session (in line with GDPR).
NCGE has developed a short guide to using the Text facility within the AGMS and this is available below.
NCGE / SalesPulse
As we are all doing our best to adapt to a ‘virtual learning environment’, we wanted to highlight Euro-Quest as a resource that might be helpful to you as part of your virtual guidance delivery. Developed by NCGE / Euroguidance Ireland - Euro-Quest promotes educational mobility. It gives an overview of Europe, highlights the study, training opportunities available, gives advice and suggestions about living and studying abroad and empowers students to research available courses.
Euro-Quest is FREE to use, and students can access and complete from home.
It is particularly suitable for TY and 5th year students.
NCGE / Euroguidance Ireland
This document has been produced in order to outline how information about students should be treated by those who work in post-primary schools. Some suggestions are made to help schools to clarify how information is treated and to enable school staff to develop relevant policies in that regard. Although particular reference is made to confidentiality in the work of the Guidance Counsellor, emphasis is placed on the adoption of a whole-school approach to the issues.

In November 2019 NCGE hosted CPD for AEGS staff, including workshops delivered by Dr Marie Rooney on ‘Supporting the practitioner to support the client: Self-Care and Mental Health issues for Adult Education Guidance Services’. The resource booklet developed by Dr Rooney for this workshop is now available and provides information, references and resources that may be useful in the support of AEGS staff and clients.

On September 192019 NCGE welcomed a group of Guidance staff recently recruited to work in established ETB AEGS around the country. This was a lively session with Guidance Coordinators, Guidance Information Officers and Guidance Counsellors taking the opportunity to listen and discuss the role of data gathering in the AEGS model, the way the AEGS model of Guidance has developed and how developments in the FET ‘landscape’ will influence Guidance delivery in to the future.
In March 2019 NCGE facilitated CPD for AEGS’ staff on the topic of Social Inclusion. The Irish Refugee Council were among the presenters at this event to inform on their role working with and for refugees in Ireland. Further to the IRC’s involvement with this CPD, the IRC have provided their Information Booklet 2019/2020, a resource which may be of use for FET guidance provision for Irish refugees or to otherwise provide relevant information/points of referral.
