'School Closures January 2021: Interactive Discussion on Digitalised Guidance'

This webinar provided an opportunity for an interactive dialogue between schools and the NCGE regarding ‘Digitalised Guidance'. Guidance Counsellors and school management were provided with an opportunity to discuss and ask questions.
In addition, resources to support good quality guidance planning and practice were highlighted.

In this episode of The NCGE Podcast, NCGE director Jennifer McKenzie meets with Dr Deirdre Hughes, OBE. Deirdre discusses her background and origins in Guidance, ongoing developments and research in the UK, and the four key principles which inform her work:

Keeping people switched onto learning
Encouraging people not to close down opportunities too early
Broadening horizons and challenging assumptions
Creating relevant exposure to, and experiences of, the world of work

Dr Hughes provides some wise words of advice for guidance community in Ireland, including to remember “the art of the possible” and to look after ourselves!

She is co-editor of the British Journal for Guidance and Counselling International Symposium Series. She is also a Cedefop appointed national expert in lifelong guidance and careers education (May 2017).

She holds an MSc in Guidance Counselling and a BA (Hons) in International Business. With over 18 years’ experience in both the business and education sectors. Within business, she has worked as a HR and recruitment specialist and in management in both public and private sector organisations. She has designed and delivered employability training to jobseekers in community settings and to individuals and groups including the EU Youth Guarantee. Aisling also has extensive experience in the education sector working with second and third level students to facilitate their understanding of the working world and skills employers are looking for.

Tara Farrell is the CEO of Longford Women’s Link. She is also Chairperson of AONTAS, the national adult learning organisation made up of 400 members across Ireland. A native of Roscommon, Tara has over 20 years’ experience in the Community, Voluntary and Education sectors, in a variety of areas including Governance, Project Management, Social Economy, Gender Equality, Conflict Resolution and engaging in Broadcast and Social Media. She holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law and also lectures in Human Rights and Equality at St. Angela’s College (National University of Ireland Galway) in Sligo. She has previously taught Political Science in the University of Limerick and Management Development at Dublin City University. Tara is also a trustee of Irish Rural Link and Roscommon Women’s Network.

Overarching Research on Data Gathered in DES/SOLAS/NCGE Adult Guidance Management System of the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative 2004 – 2018

The main objectives of this overarching research report are to:

generate an overarching overview report of the quantitative and qualitative data gathered on the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative (AEGI) – Adult Educational Guidance Service (AEGS) AGMS database from 2004-2018
include a report on the documented Case Studies provided as required within the AGMS since 2013

In relation to the scope of this research, NCGE emphasises that it does not provide an ‘evaluation’ of the (ETB) Adult Educational Guidance Services nationally, nor does it provide an evaluation of the AGMS. However, the research will inform the final completion, close-off and archiving of the NCGE AGMS system. This research may also inform developments and data-gathering in any future FET Guidance Management System.

Career guidance policy and practice in the pandemic

This report, with contribution from NCGE Director, Jennifer McKenzie, is based on a flash joint international survey, designed to provide a snapshot of how career guidance policies, systems and services were adapting and coping, following the declaration of the world Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. The survey examined the policy, systems and practice changes that occurred during the first phase of government reactions to the pandemic, the extent to which the pandemic and its social consequences triggered a debate on career guidance reform, and the role for career guidance in pandemic recovery measures. It also considered the support role of international and donor bodies.

On Wednesday 17th of February 2021 an additional webinar took place to share the main findings of this publication, and bring together policymakers, social partners, career guidance practitioners and service managers.
