Whole School Guidance: Continuum of Support Resources

The aim of the following resources is to highlight how a continuum of support model for Whole School Guidance could be implemented in a school. These resources include case studies on the continuum of support model, as well as an Appendix I Indvidual Career Learning Plan. Schools can use and adapt these resources together to suit their own unique contexts. These resources were originally developed as part of a 2018 NCGE Whole School Guidance Pilot Project, 'Looking at Whole School Guidance at Junior Cycle'.

This resource has been developed for students of Junior Cycle.
It aims to gather data on Junior Cycle students' Guidance needs.

Support for Guidance Counsellors and Schools around Student Disclosures of Suicide and/or Self Harm

NCGE, in consultation with the Department of Education and NEPS have collated a resource to support Guidance Counsellors and Schools to support students who are self-harming and/or disclosing thoughts about suicide. This resource maps out important processes and procedures a school can follow to support students during all stages. It provides key points for Guidance Counsellors, management and others to reflect on - if they encounter a student in need.

It is envisaged that this document would be used in a school in line with the school’s confidentiality template.

If Guidance Counsellors or school management require any further support with regard to Suicide/Self Harm, please do not hesitate to contact NCGE.

Reconnecting with Education - Guidance for post-primary schools for students at risk of early school leaving

This Department document aims to support schools in encouraging students to return to school to complete their education, and/or to outline options such as alternative pathways to further education or employment.
The role of the Guidance Counsellor in preventing early school leaving within the whole school approach, and appropriately supporting  students’ access to Further Education and Training  is clearly outlined.

It is important for school Guidance Counsellors to establish links with their local ETB Adult Educational Guidance Services to facilitate consideration of  these alternative education and training options when appropriate.
