The National Centre for Guidance in Education (NCGE) will cease to operate from 1st September 2022. 
The NCGE and its Management Committee, Léargas, the Department of Education, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Solas and ETBI have been carrying out significant work since earlier this year to prepare for the reorganisation of guidance support. A Transitions Working Group and additional sub-groups have been meeting regularly to co-ordinate the reorganisation.

'Working with Students with Intellectual Disabilities'

In this webinar, Eimear McDonnell (Temporary Guidance Officer, NCGE) hosted the sharing of information by relevant stakeholders on current and developing supports for students with intellectual disabilities.

Speakers at this webinar included:

  • Elaine Morris and Val Real, Limerick Clare branch of the National Learning Network (NLN)
    The NLN 2021 prospectus may be useful to Guidance Counsellors in Post Primary providing guidance to students with intellectual disabilities.

The NCGE resource document 'Setting up a Network of support' has been updated to include a list of relevant National Disability Supports.

'Settling Back In and Self Care for the Guidance Counsellor'

In this webinar, Eimear McDonnell (Temporary Guidance Officer, NCGE) touched on on her doctoral research, which looked at post-primary Guidance Counsellor resilience in challenging contexts.
As part of the information provided on “Settling back in and Self-care for the Guidance Counsellor in post-primary schools” - Leah Moore from Spectrum.Life discussed the Employee Assistance Service (EAS) available to ALL school staff and their family members, known as ‘Wellbeing Together: Folláine le Chéile’.

Setting up a Network of Support (resource)

This resource has 2 x parts

This provides a visual representation of many school based, local and national supports that are available to support Guidance Counsellors in their work with students. 
It is a 'quick reference' guide and will be suitable to hang as a poster in the Guidance Office / Staffroom /on the Wellbeing notice board etc.
A version where you can your own additional local information is also provided.

Resource List:
This provides a base template for a detailed list of supports which post-primary Guidance Counsellors / Students may access. 
This list seeks to enhance the work of the Guidance Counsellor as it outlines multiple local and national agencies which specialise in the variety of complex issues experienced by students. Key school supports and international supports are also included. This list may be appended to the Whole School Guidance Plan and/or may be a 'stand alone' document for consultation. This list was revised in October 2021 to include National Disability Supports.
