Evidence Based Handbook: Guidance Case Studies

The purpose of this Handbook is to present the work of four guidance counsellors who developed an evidence-based approach for guidance in their schools as part of their participation on the NCGE Whole School Guidance Planning (WSGP) programme.
• Case Study 1 written by Gearóidin Brady, a guidance counsellor working in a school in Donegal.
• Case Study 2 written by Niamh Dwyer, a guidance counsellor working in a school in Kerry
• Case Study 3 written by Dymphna Foody, a guidance counsellor working in a school in Dublin.
• Case Study 4 written by Peter Hyde, a former guidance counsellor and now a deputy principal in a school in Cork.
This Handbook was launched at the National Conference on Guidance 2013 on March 1st with some of those involved speaking to a national and international audience of guidance practitioners and policy makers on their experience.

Research on The Practice of Counselling by Guidance Counsellors in Post Primary Schools

This research into the practice of counselling by guidance counsellors was undertaken by Professor Mark Morgan and Dr Claire Hayes. Career guidance and public policy: Bridging the gap - This publication reports the findings of a review that was begun in early 2001 of career guidance policies in 14 OECD countries. It has looked at how the organisation, management and delivery of career guidance can help to advance some key public policy objectives. In particular, the review has looked at how career guidance services can assist countries to advance lifelong learning goals, and at how career guidance can help in the implementation of active labour market policies

Programme Recognition Framework: Guidance Counselling Criteria and Guidelines for Programme Provider

The Department of Education and Skills has published a Programme Recognition Framework (PRF) which sets out criteria and guidelines for providers of initial education programmes in guidance counselling who intend that their programme graduates will work in guidance services under the remit of the Department.

Survey on the Continuing Professional Development needs of guidance counsellors in secondary schools

Report on the Findings. Published May, 2014.

NCGE conducted a survey of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of guidance counsellors in second level schools in March, 2014. The aim of the survey was to establish the needs of guidance counsellors in relation to CPD and to establish the best modes and delivery timeframes for CPD.
