NCGE convenes the committee of Directors of Studies of Guidance Counselling (DSGC). Its terms of reference are to
- examine existing provision of initial and in-service training for guidance counsellors.
- consider development of induction programmes for recently trained guidance counsellors.
- examine developments in adult education and consider the interconnection between school and adult guidance in the context of lifelong learning.
- make proposals to the Department of Education and Skills, its agencies and other relevant parties, arising from the above.
The guidance course directors agreed, through consultative process on a course recognition framework for the initial qualification of guidance counsellors. This recognition framework enables the Department of Education and Skills to ensure that guidance counsellors employed in post primary and further education settings are appropriately qualified and have the necessary knowledge, skills and competences.
NCGE facilitates collaboration between the DSGC and other agencies such as IGC and the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). Consultation with the PSI resulted in the securing of certification for the psychometric modules on the initial training programmes in guidance. Guidance counsellors graduating from these programmes will automatically have their training recognised by the PSI for administering certain psychometric tests. Those who completed their guidance counselling in the period 1999 to 2005 are also covered under this agreement.
