What is NCGE?

The National Centre for Guidance in Education is an agency of the Irish Department of Education & Science. Its main roles are to support and develop guidance practice in all areas of education and to inform the policy of the Department in the field of guidance.

The Centre operates in accordance with its Terms of Reference through the following types of activities:

Informing the policy of the Dept. of Education & Science in matters relating to guidance
Promoting and supporting strategies for the provision of guidance and counselling in the context of lifelong learning
Developing and evaluating guidance resources, including ICT resources
Providing support of innovative guidance projects
Providing opportunities for in-career development for guidance practitioners
Providing technical advice and information on guidance practice
Promoting, developing and disseminating good practice in guidance
Informing practitioners of developments in guidance
Participating in, and providing support for, research into guidance practice and needs
Managing National and European initiatives and projects in the field of guidance for the Dept. of Education & Science and the European Commission
Convening National Advisory Committees to advise on its projects and initiatives
Consulting with relevant agencies, organisations and government departments

 

 
Who is NCGE for?

NCGE provides support to the Dept. of Education & Science, relevant organisations and agencies, and guidance practitioners in education.

These include:

Support Teachers in primary schools
Guidance counsellors in second level schools
Guidance practitioners in third level education
Guidance practitioners working with adults in education
Guidance practitioners working in Youthreach and similar programmes.
   
Does NCGE provide guidance to individuals? No.

NCGE does not provide a one-on-one guidance service to the public. It does provide information and advice to persons wishing to study or train in another Member State. This service is provided as part of NCGE's participation in the European network of National Resource Centres for Guidance funded by the Leonardo da Vinci Programme.

 
Who manages NCGE?

The Management Committee of the National Centre for Guidance in Education is appointed by the Minister of Education and Science.

 
Who are the staff of NCGE?
NCGE is staffed by the Director, National Coordinator of the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative, Project Officers, Information Officer and Office Administrator. Staff bring a range of qualifications and experience to their roles in the areas of guidance, counselling, teaching, research, library and information studies, ICT, project management, specialist journalism. The Centre also engages guidance practitioners on a contract basis for special projects.
