Initial Training of Guidance Counsellors

The NCGE convened committee of Directors and Representatives of the Initial Training Programmes in Guidance meets four times a year and its terms
of reference are to:

examine existing provision of initial and in-service training for guidance counsellors
consider development of induction programmes for recently trained guidance counsellors
examine developments in adult education and consider the interconnection between school and adult guidance in the context of lifelong learning
make proposals to the Department of Education and Science, its agencies and other relevant parties, arising out the above

Arising out of this consultative process, the guidance course directors have reached agreement on a course recognition framework for the initial training of guidance counsellors. This recognition framework enables the Department of Education and Science and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors to ensure that guidance counsellors employed in education settings are appropriately
qualified and have the necessary knowledge, skills and competences to work with young people and adults.

Another outcome has been the securing of certification from the PSI (Psychological Society of Ireland) for the psychometric modules on the initial
training programmes in guidance. Guidance counsellors who graduate from these programmes will automatically have their training recognised by the PSI for administering certain psychometric tests in schools. Those who completed their training in the period 1999 to 2005 are also covered under this agreement, which helps to ensure that guidance counsellors are appropriately qualified and
recognised in the area of psychometric testing.
