Lifelong Guidance: Harmonising Policy and Practice (2004)
This publication details the outcomes and recommendations of this conference, hosted by NCGE in collaboration with the Department of Education and Science in April 2004, during the Irish presidency of the EU. The context for the conference was the increasing awareness of policy makers of the significant role of guidance in providing access to learning and employment opportunities, in motivating learners and workers, an in enabling people to manage their own lives and career paths. Recommendations to policy makers and key players arising out of the conference have fed into the work of the National Guidance Forum. |

The purpose of this document is to provide schools
and all interested parties with a comprehensive
aid to understanding, developing and implementing
a school's guidance plan. This publication supersedes
the 1996 Guidelines for the Practice of Guidance

Future
Directions Video: My Name's Not Down (2000)
Eddie,
Debbie, Lisa, Catherine, Stuart, Stephen, Pauline,
Karen, Rosaleen and Lorraine are young early school
leavers from different parts of Ireland. 'My
Name's Not Down...' was developed as part of the
young people's contribution to the conference:
'Future Directions - Guidance as a Force for Social
Inclusion'. Funded by the EU Initiative
Employment Youthstart and the Dept. of Education
& Science, the aim of the conference was to
improve guidance provision for young people at
risk of social exclusion.

Staying
Power: A Colloquium on Increasing
Retention Rates in Higher Education (2000)
This
is a report of the Proceedings from a conference
organised by NCGE in November 1999: 'Staying
Power: Increasing Retention Rates in Higher Education'. A number of key recommendations were identified
in relation to second level schools and third
level colleges including guidance support, academic
support in higher education, course transfers,
financial support, peer support, prospectuses
and other information sources, parents, facilities
and personal issues.

This
is the Final Report for a project commenced by
NCGE in 1997.
This project was a response to the identified
need for guidance skills training for Youthreach
staff. The project was supported by the

This
report examines in detail what exists in terms
of guidance provision for young people at risk
of social exclusion. In addition it looks
at the practitioners' views on the needs and characteristics
of the young people they are dealing with, and
what they (the practitioners) feel contributes
to or limits success in working with these young

Training in Community Based Guidance - a formative evaluation
of a development programme in four European countries
funded under the European Commission Leonardo
Programme by Tony Watts
and John McCarthy (1998)
This
report examines issues relating to the provision
of non-formal guidance to young people at risk
through intermediaries such as family, neighbours,
social/community and youth workers. In particular
it explores issues for formal guidance providers
and for trainers. It is based on a Leonardo da Vinci supported pilot project. Details
are provided of training programmes in non-formal
guidance. The project partners include Careers Europe Bradford Ltd. (UK), LDC (Netherlands) and
CEFOC/UNINOVA (Portugal).

people, and the management of guidance in schools.

Guidance
in the Information Society (1997)
This
is a report of the Proceedings from a conference
organised by NCGE in December 1996: 'Fourth
European Conference on Information & Communications Technology in Guidance'. The
conference (i) underlined the increasing value
placed on guidance to assist EU citizens in economic
and social integration throughout their lifetime,
and (ii) stressed the role of information and
communications technology in supporting the practice
of guidance to assist such integration.

Consumers' View (1997)
Parents,
pupils and guidance counsellors express their
views on the sources of information they use when
making career decisions in this interesting study
carried out by the College of Marketing and Design
(Dublin Institute of Technology)
for NCGE. The report also includes recommendations,
based on the research, to improve careers information
materials in Irish schools.

Guidelines
for the Practice of Guidance and Counselling in
Schools (1996)
This
is a policy document of the Dept. of Education
which was finalised by NCGE. It sets out a clear
framework for the provision of guidance in second
level schools, outlines the roles of significant
persons in the guidance process in schools and
provides detailed descriptions of the responsibilities
of the guidance counsellor, school management
and the Dept. of Education. The report recommends
the use of guidance resources exclusively for
the purposes of guidance, the sharing of guidance
posts between proximate schools, a recommended
minimum guidance provision of 8 hours for all
schools, and an Action Plan for guidance in education.

Non-Formal Guidance
for Young People at Risk (French and English editions) by Tony Watts and John
McCarthy
(1996)
The
provision of guidance for young people at risk,
who are outside the formal education, training
and employment systems, represents a major challenge
to guidance policy makers and practitioners. This
report by Tony Watts and John McCarthy explores
the role of non-formal provision in the delivering
of guidance to these young people. The authors
describe action research projects undertaken in
6 EU Member States to tackle this problem, supported
by the EU PETRA Programme.
