Research on The Practice of Counselling by Guidance Counsellors in Post Primary Schools (2011)

This research into the practice of counselling by guidance counsellors was undertaken by Professor Mark Morgan and Dr Claire Hayes. It was commissioned by the National
Centre for Guidance in Education (NCGE) under the direction of an advisory Steering Group.


Ireland, Researching your Options (2010)

This booklet gives an outline of Higher Education, Further Education and Training Opportunities in Ireland. It also contains information on Certification, Costs, and Application procedures. It is extremely useful for students from outside Ireland as it gives a broad overview of Educational opportunities in Ireland

NCGE's Creative Guidance in Challenging Times (2009)

Guidance stimulates individuals to seek opportunities for success beyond their everyday horizons and to maintain their courage in pursing such opportunities. This booklet is designed to provide ideas and links to resources for guidance counsellors in their work with their clients.

NCGE's Research Code of Ethics (2008)

NCGE takes pride in the quality of the research it has undertaken both in-house and through commissioned work. The publication of NCGE's Research Code of Ethics provides an articulation of the values and principles underlying the Centre's investigative methodologies.

NCGE in Support of Guidance: Policy and Practice 1995-2005

The staff of NCGE have compiled this publication to mark the tenth anniversary of the Centre. We hope that it will contribute to the body of knowledge on guidance in Ireland and illustrate the role NCGE has played in support of guidance. We anticipate that it will be a valuable reference for policy makers, trainers of guidance counsellors and their students, practitioners and all those who contribute to the provision of guidance in Ireland

NCGE news aims to keep its readers informed of activities and developments that are taking place in guidance. Reports on policy, research, good practice,  pilot projects, reviews of guidance materials make it essential reading for those involved in guidance and a definitive reference source.  NCGE news is circulated to all post-primary schools, youth information centres, third level colleges, Teachers Centres, VTOS centres, Community Training Workshops, Youthreach Centres, VECS, Institutes of Technology and Dept. of Education & Science officials.
Lifelong Guidance: Harmonising Policy and Practice (2004)

This publication details the outcomes and recommendations of this conference, hosted by NCGE in collaboration with the Department of Education and Science in April 2004, during the Irish presidency of the EU. The context for the conference was the increasing awareness of policy makers of the significant role of guidance in providing access to learning and employment opportunities, in motivating learners and workers, an in enabling people to manage their own lives and career paths. Recommendations to policy makers and key players arising out of the conference have fed into the work of the National Guidance Forum.

The purpose of this document is to provide schools and all interested parties with a comprehensive aid to understanding, developing and implementing a school's guidance plan. This publication supersedes the 1996 Guidelines for the Practice of Guidance and Counselling in Schools. Planning the School Guidance Programme is also available in Irish.


Future Directions - Guidance as a Force for the Social Inclusion of Young People Conference Proceedings (2002)

These Conference Proceedings detail the four themes presented at the Conference in the format of workshops: Good Practice in Guidance for Young People at Risk; Longitudinal Support for Young People; Preparing the Labour Market for Young People; and Training for Guidance Personnel Working With Young People at Risk.


My Name's Not Down Video Cover

Future Directions Video: My Name's Not Down (2000)

Eddie, Debbie, Lisa, Catherine, Stuart, Stephen, Pauline, Karen, Rosaleen and Lorraine are young early school leavers from different parts of Ireland.  'My Name's Not Down...' was developed as part of the young people's contribution to the conference: 'Future Directions - Guidance as a Force for Social Inclusion'.  Funded by the EU Initiative Employment Youthstart and the Dept. of Education & Science, the aim of the conference was to improve guidance provision for young people at risk of social exclusion.


Staying Power Cover

Staying Power: A Colloquium on Increasing Retention Rates in Higher Education (2000)

This is a report of the Proceedings from a conference organised by NCGE in November 1999: 'Staying Power: Increasing Retention Rates in Higher Education'.  A number of key recommendations were identified in relation to second level schools and third level colleges including guidance support, academic support in higher education, course transfers, financial support, peer support, prospectuses and other information sources, parents, facilities and personal issues.

This is the Final Report for a project commenced by NCGE in 1997.  
This project was a response to the identified need for guidance skills training for Youthreach staff.  The project was supported by the EU Youthstart Project.

This report examines in detail what exists in terms of guidance provision for young people at risk of social exclusion.  In addition it looks at the practitioners' views on the needs and characteristics of the young people they are dealing with, and what they (the practitioners) feel contributes to or limits success in working with these young people.

CBGA Report cover

Training in Community Based Guidance - a formative evaluation of a development programme in four European countries funded under the European Commission Leonardo Programme by Tony Watts and John McCarthy (1998)

This report examines issues relating to the provision of non-formal guidance to young people at risk through intermediaries such as family, neighbours, social/community and youth workers. In particular it explores issues for formal guidance providers and for trainers. It is based on a Leonardo da Vinci supported pilot project. Details are provided of training programmes in non-formal guidance. The project partners include Careers Europe Bradford Ltd. (UK), LDC (Netherlands) and CEFOC/UNINOVA (Portugal).

Guidance in the Information Society

Guidance in the Information Society (1997)

This is a report of the Proceedings from a conference organised by NCGE in December 1996: 'Fourth European Conference on Information & Communications Technology in Guidance'.  The conference (i) underlined the increasing value placed on guidance to assist EU citizens in economic and social integration throughout their lifetime, and (ii) stressed the role of information and communications technology in supporting the practice of guidance to assist such integration.

Consumers' View
(1997)

Parents, pupils and guidance counsellors express their views on the sources of information they use when making career decisions in this interesting study carried out by the College of Marketing and Design (Dublin Institute of Technology) for NCGE. The report also includes recommendations, based on the research, to improve careers information materials in Irish schools.

Guidelines for the Practice of Guidance and Counselling in Schools (1996)

This is a policy document of the Dept. of Education which was finalised by NCGE. It sets out a clear framework for the provision of guidance in second level schools, outlines the roles of significant persons in the guidance process in schools and provides detailed descriptions of the responsibilities of the guidance counsellor, school management and the Dept. of Education. The report recommends the use of guidance resources exclusively for the purposes of guidance, the sharing of guidance posts between proximate schools, a recommended minimum guidance provision of 8 hours for all schools, and an Action Plan for guidance in education.

The provision of guidance for young people at risk, who are outside the formal education, training and employment systems, represents a major challenge to guidance policy makers and practitioners. This report by Tony Watts and John McCarthy explores the role of non-formal provision in the delivering of guidance to these young people. The authors describe action research projects undertaken in 6 EU Member States to tackle this problem, supported by the EU PETRA Programme.
