Support Teachers
There are 42 support teachers serving 48
primary schools in disadvantaged areas
nationwide. Those working in this role support
students with emotional and behavioural
difficulties.
In 1999, NCGE carried out a Guidance Training
Needs Analysis for the Support Teacher Scheme
and again in 2004 distributed a survey to these
teachers in order to ascertain what support
NCGE could provide to them in their day to day
work. The Centre has used the findings of the
surveys to inform NCGE News articles –
information on best practice in other countries

Support
for the Transition from Primary to Post Primary
Many pupils need support in the transfer from primary
to post primary schooling. Collaboration between schools
at primary and post primary level has resulted in the
implementation of successful models of providing the
necessary supports to make this transition as simple
as possible for the pupils. Articles on the issues involved
in transferring from primary to post primary and an
example of a transfer programme in action were included
in NCGE News:

Career
Related Learning in Primary Schools
Career-related
learning helps children to understand the world of work.
At present in the UK, practitioners and policy makers
are exploring the need to include career-related learning
in the primary curriculum. It is anticipated that such
learning will aid children in managing their learning
and work, understand and develop themselves, and prepare
them for adult working life.
