Guidance in Post Primary Schools

Guidance is a universal entitlement in post primary schools as per the Education Act (1998). Each school is granted an additional teaching resource by the Department of Education and Skills for guidance purposes, ranging from approximately eight hours per week in small schools (less than 200 students), to approximately two full-time posts in schools with 1000 students or more.

Guidance also forms part of the curriculum in the Transition Year Programme (TYP), the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP).

Advisory Committee on Psychometric Testing

The Advisory Committee on Psychometric Testing is convened by NCGE on behalf of the DES and meets annually to review and update the list of tests issued by the Department to post primary schools. The following organisations are represented on the Committee, the IGC, ILSA (Irish Learning Support Association), PSI (Psychological Society of Ireland), NEPS, DES, NCGE and representatives from the Directors of Initial Education Programmes in Guidance Counselling and Learning Support. The list of tests issued to schools in 2009 can be accessed here.

NCGE offers Continuing Professional Development for Guidance Counsellors in Whole School Guidance Planning

What is Whole School Guidance Planning?

The Programme equips guidance counsellors working in post primary schools with the knowledge and skills that are required to undertake the guidance planning process, rather than providing schools with a generic guidance plan.

This takes into account the uniqueness of each school and the context in which the guidance counsellor operates.

The programme consists of three modules each of approximately 14 weeks duration

Module 1: Reviewing Whole School Guidance

Module 2: Action Planning

Module 3: Evaluation

Modules 1 and 2 are offered to guidance counsellors twice a year i.e. February and September of each year.

Over 200 post primary schools nationwide have participated in the programme.

Benefits of participating in this CPD programme
