Assessment Testing: Findings of a survey on the training needs of Guidance Counsellors in Post-Primary Schools (2003)
The need to conduct a survey on assessment testing arose out of the discussions of the NCGE convened committee of the Directors and Representatives of the Initial Training Programmes in Guidance.
A questionnaire was distributed to guidance counsellors in post-primary schools by NCGE through a mailing of NCGE News in spring 2002. The questionnaire examined the use of tests, training in testing and training needs for each category of tests – aptitude, interest and personal problem resolution. Guidance counsellors were also provided with the opportunity to make additional comments.
Since the survey’s publication, NCGE has provided supplements for the Guidance Counsellor’s Handbook as well as regular updates in NCGE News on assessment testing. The survey has informed meetings of the Initial Trainers’ Committee and provided policy makers with information concerning the needs of counsellors in this area. Click here for report
