Assessment of the Use of Information Technology in Guidance in Post Primary Schools (1998)
This study arose from the Action Plan for Guidance developed jointly by the Department of Education and Science and NCGE in September 1998. NCGE undertook to identify what the current provision was and investigate future requirements in relation to the use of ICT for guidance in post-primary schools. Under review were issues of access, hardware, software, training, and support for computer-assisted guidance.
The study recommended that all guidance counsellors be provided with a computer dedicated to guidance use and training in the application of IT for guidance was urged. The IT2000 government initiative, spearheaded by the newly established National Centre for Technology in Education, subsequently equipped counsellors in post-primary schools with computers for the purpose of guidance.
A working group comprising of representatives from NCGE, the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, HEA and other relevant organizations worked closely with NCTE to provide the relevant training for guidance counsellors through the Education Centre network. click here for report
