The European Dimension in the Training of Guidance Counsellors
VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
In addition to the examples of training programmes developed through European collaboration in the adult and non-formal guidance sectors the use of a Virtual Learning Environment for the training of guidance practitioners was piloted with support from the Leonardo da Vinci programme between 2000 and 2001. Participants on the course included guidance counsellors from second level schools, and practitioners from primary, adult and higher education settings. The Project demonstrated the potential of using the internet as a medium for training guidance practitioners in Ireland. However, it was recognized that in utilizing the internet as a medium for training, proficiency and confidence on behalf of the trainee in using the internet and other software packages is crucial along with the availability of and trainee's continuous access to such technology. It was also recognized by NCGE that ongoing support and encouragement to trainees is hugely important (more information.) In the light of such insights NCGE is considering the possible provision of training/support to guidance counsellors through utilizing the information and communicational technologies.

The MODILE EUROCARCO project aimed to develop a distance learning training programme in guidance. Ten partners from six different countries participated in the project. The role of NCGE in the project was to supervise the development of eleven modules and assist in the development of a distance learning package. The modules will be delivered mainly as initial training in guidance in a number of the participating countries (more information)

ACADEMIA EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
NCGE has co-ordinated the sending of Irish practitioners and hosting of our European Colleagues through the exchange of guidance counsellor project for
twelve years. Guidance practitioners can benefit from their direct experience of the European dimension through a one week guidance study visit in an EU, EEA or pre-accession country. Host guidance counsellors also benefit from the exchange of ideas, resources, methods and discussions with European colleagues (more information )
