The European Dimension in the Development of Adult Guidance in Ireland

The development of the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative in Ireland, provides an excellent example of how European projects can influence the development of National policy. In 1998, NCGE promoted a Leonardo da Vinci funded project which looked at training trainers to provide a course in the 'Educational Management of Adult Guidance'. The course focussed on issues in setting up an efficient and needs based guidance service for adults. The course has just completed its fourth year with mainstream funding from the Department of Education and Science.

The Government published its White Paper on Adult Education: Learning for Life in 2000. The White Paper included reference to a National Adult Guidance & Counselling Service to provide pre-entry, entry, on-going, pre-exit guidance to adults in education. There are currently 25 Adult Educational Guidance Initiative pilot projects nationwide which have been set up on a phased basis since 2000. Many of those currently involved in the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative have successfully completed the Educational Management of Adult Guidance Certificate since its development in 1998. In essence they were prepared for there involvement by training developed through European collaboration.

EU collaboration also resulted in the development of the ISSEE Quality Guidelines for Adult Guidance which have been mainstreamed through the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative and form part of the AEGI handbook.
