International Guidance

Several international organisations support the development of good practice in guidance, exchange of ideas and information and collaboration on innovative guidance projects.

Organisations include:

European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP)the European Union's reference centre for vocational education and training. The Centre provides information on, and analysis of, vocational education and training systems, policies, research and practice.

International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance (IAEVG) promotes the exchange of ideas and experiences within the educational and vocational guidance community worldwide, disseminates information on the latest educational and vocational guidance research and practice, and provides opportunities for continuing professional development for guidance practitioners.

International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy (ICCDPP): promotes policy sharing and learning in the field of career development in both education and employment sectors. The ICCDPP hosts International symposia, inviting country teams to participate. The Ireland County team in 2011 was lead by NCGE with representatives from the DES Inspectorate and Institute of Guidance Counsellors.

Organisation for Economic Co-Operation & Development (OECD): publishes outlooks, annual overviews and comparative statistics. The OECD launched a review in 2001 of the guidance policies and practices of 14 countries, including Ireland. This led to the publication of Review of Career Guidance Policies: Ireland Country Note in 2002. The OECD and European Commission published Career Guidance, a Handbook for Policy Makers in 2005 which addresses a broad range of policy issues that are central to the effective delivery of career guidance services.
